multi_culture

Where did everyone come from? All over, this area contains people from the entire world. They have all mixed together since the year 1500, africans, europeans, and the original inhabitants, the indians.

Europeans first arrived here in the late 1490’s. First the indians were pushed out and original colonies were started on their old city sites. The Pope divided South America between Spain and Portugal, and the French felt left out. Brazil was divided into 14 regions to try to keep out the French, but they had influence here and there. There were also skirmishes between Portugal and The Dutch. They all had an impact in the colonial regions, and all the while there was slavery. At times extremely brutal. Today one can see all the past influences alive and well in Salvador and surrounding areas. It would be hard to understand Brazil without a visit to this beautiful and culturally diverse region.
